He said that numerous changes he has put in place would have been regarded by previous administrations as hard to implement, but now that he has done them, to his critics they no longer qualify as “big bang”.

“In the last two years I have tried my best to make the states more powerful so that it can work for the upliftment of the poor and marginalised”, he added.

The GST bill, which has been approved by Lok Sabha, is pending in Rajya Sabha because of stiff resistance by Congress which has a majority in the Upper House. By and large, all parties except the Congress are on board.

He said the efforts to amend the land acquisition law at the federal level were “over now” and it is now up to individual states to pursue changes.

“Labour reform should not just mean in the interest of industry”.

But at the same time he was quick to add that there was a need to do more. “I have an enormous task ahead for myself”, the WSJ quoted Prime Minister Modi as saying.

He further said that during the two years of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government there has been no case of graft and his government is accountable for every single penny. “You can’t suddenly get rid of the public sector, nor should you”, Prime Minister Modi told WSJ in an interview at his 7 RCR residence.

“I am here to assure you that we are doing everything to live up to the faith people have reposed in us”.

“The grand prize awaiting the winners – a certificate signed by Narendra Modi himself and an opportunity to meet him in person”, says an announcement on My-Gov platform.

“Corruption is hollowing out our country hollow like termites. About one crore, 62 lakh ration cards have been recovered”, said Modi at India Gate while giving accounts of his government’s performance in the past two years.

His remarks came a day after Congress mounted attack on the government.

PM Modi said a government’s work should be evaluated in reference to the work of its predecessor. “For instance, the BJP promised black money stacked in foreign banks will be retrieved in 100 days, but no measures have come up on this front”.

“So this (improving relationship with neighbors) is my own initiative”, Modi said responding to a question on ties with neighbors, in particular Pakistan.

Home minister Rajnath Singh, who also spoke, noted that several cane growers in Uttar Pradesh had switched over to raising poplar trees.

“Yes terrorism is a concern for the whole world”.

However, the Indian premier stressed that there could not be any compromise on terrorism. “We are acutely conscious of our responsibilities both in the region and internationally”, he said.

He said the Modi government had maintained a balance between economic reforms and public welfare.
