Major League Baseball Trade Deadline Rumors and News: David Price Target For Dodgers, Toronto

And good for…whoa, wait just a Hollywood minute.

The Yankees will not sit idly by in the David Price sweepstakes, which officially began in earnest Wednesday when Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said all impending free agents on his roster, including the former Cy Young Award victor, are available.

Once the Tigers made clear David Price was available for trade, and once the Dodgers were among teams expected to bid for Price, Detroit’s ideal Dodgers prospect was destined to be Julio Urias, an 18-year-old left-handed starting pitcher.

The Dodgers are also now working on a three-team deal with the Atlanta Braves and Miami Marlins involved Mat Latos.

Nonetheless, it is believed the Tigers, who are hearing from multiple clubs fixated on Price, are firm in wanting Urias in any deal with the Dodgers.

Price is the third ace to be moved in recent days, joining Cole Hamels (from the Philadelphia Phillies to Texas Rangers) and Johnny Cueto (from the Cincinnati Reds to the Kansas City Royals).

The Yankees and Giants, sure.

In the short term, Giants fans can breathe a sigh of relief that neither Hamels nor Price will join Kershaw and Greinke in a Dodgers rotation that would’ve been as formidable as any since 1966, when they had three future Hall of Famers in Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale and Don Sutton.

The Astros appear to have a nice long window of competitiveness ahead of them, so they’re understandably averse to trading away too much of that future for a one-off shot at a championship this season.

Accomplishing that in just one midseason trade is a coup for the Tigers, who gave up the remaining year-plus of team control over Austin Jackson and four-and-a-half years of team control of Drew Smyly – along with well-regarded minor-league shortstop Willy Adames – in the three-way deal that brought Price to town.

Several more prospects are reportedly included in this deal.

But one thing I do know is that if the Dodgers fail to land Price, Flores won’t be the only one shedding tears this season.

According to MLB.com, the Phillies are trading Hamels and pitcher Jake Diekman to the Rangers for a haul of players, including prospects with catcher Jorge Alfaro, outfielder Nick Williams and pitchers Alec Asher, Jerad Eickhoff and Jake Thompson along with vet starter Matt Harrison.
