Memorial Day events set for Monday

Two Honor Guard cemetery crews will depart from the Legion Dugout at 7 a.m. The west run, commanded by Legionnaire Bob Ehrke, will be at Wards Cemetery at 7:20 a.m., North Oakland at 7:33, Oakland at 7:45, Ives at 8:05, Seventh Day Adventist at 8:20, Bussseyville at 8:40 and Union at 8:50.

Formerly known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day was first observed as a day of remembrance of soldiers who died in wartime. At 10 a.m., services will be at Westlawn Cemetery in Gering and at Mitchell Valley Cemetery in Mitchell.

Ceremonies to honor our fallen veterans will be conducted on Monday May 30 at the cemeteries in Soap Lake at 10a.m., Ephrata at 11 a.m. and Quincy at 12:30 p.m. Each ceremony is a little different, with flag raising and lowering, speakers, color guard, firing squad, and the playing of taps; but all are for the objective remembering those who gave of themselves for their country. Food and refreshments are served following the service.

Plato Memorial Day service is at 9 a.m.at the Plato City Hall. The cemetery is at 15950 N. Luckett Road in Marana. The parade will include floats, high school marching bands, veterans, service members, local and national celebrities, service organizations and clubs, and much more!

As soon as the parade traffic clears, FM 2410/Knight’s Way will reopen.

At 11 a.m. Monday a service will honor the deceased veterans at St. Augustine. The parade organizes outside the post on Walter Street at 9:30 a.m. and commences at 10.

“On this 150th anniversary of Memorial Day, we hope the community will come out to support this important parade, which honors men and women from all branches of the military and from all wars throughout the history of our great country”, stated Bob McMahon, Mayor of Media and Chairman of the Veterans Legacy Project. Following the service, a potluck will be held at Fern Town Hall. A parade will be at 11 a.m. from Main Street to Patriot Park with a program following. In the 1940s, she and her grandmother would head out to clean and decorate the graves of veterans, as well as non-veterans. The 2016 Guest Speaker will be David Hub. S.E. Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs will be the keynote speaker before the wreath-laying ceremony. Memorial Day is a time where many people return the sacrifice and offering veterans make on a daily basis by volunteering in their communities. At 3 p.m., they will be at Greene County Chapel before moving on to Liberty Cemetery in Hendricksville, Solsberry Memorial Park at the Eastern Fire Station and the Bingham Cemetery. At about 1 p.m., there will be a dedication of additional names to the memorial plaque.
