Trump backs out of debate with Sanders

The presumptive GOP presidential nominee now says he won’t debate the Democratic White House candidate – something Trump had initially seemed open to on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Clinton’s lead in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination is almost insurmountable, but Sanders has continued to win primaries and draws far larger and more raucous crowds to his rallies. So with the event now dead, it was only fitting that Sanders would return to late night on Friday to knock Trump for backing out.

US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has ruled out a one-on-one debate with second-place Democratic hopeful Bernie Sanders, killing off a potentially high-ratings television spectacle.

As recently as Thursday, Trump said he would be willing to face off against Sanders if either the Democratic underdog’s campaign or a network sponsor would pony up between $10 million and $15 million to benefit what he vaguely described as “women’s health issues”.

Sanders responded with a statement Friday saying: “In recent days, Donald Trump has said he wants to debate, he doesn’t want to debate, he wants to debate and, now, he doesn’t want to debate. And I think the American people should be very concerned about somebody who keeps changing his mind, not only on this debate, but on virtually every issue he’s been asked about”, Sanders said.

I hope that he changes his mind, again.

Sanders is trailing Clinton in the race to secure their party’s nomination. “But I think we have a good chance to win in California, maybe win big, and maybe win four or five of the other states that are off on June 7th”, he said.

Sanders said he has plenty of questions for Trump about his insults of Muslims, Mexicans and women. “Yes or No? He wants to know if you will debate him”, Kimmel said.

When Maher introduces the topic of the debate between Sanders and Trump that was so close to happening, Sanders shakes his fists in frustration.

“With your support we can go into the Democratic National Convention with a great deal of momentum and we can come out with the Democratic nomination”, said Sanders.

On Sunday, Sanders, desperately trailing the front-running Clinton in the delegate count, continued to not comment directly on the controversy.

As you can imagine, a Trump-Sanders matchup sent the internet, the media and TV networks into a tailspin – at least for about a day, until Trump backed out.
