Weiss and Benioff did not apologize for killing off Hodor, instead, they apologized for all of the idiots who will be shouting “Hodor” every time you go through a door.

“We would like to apologize for Sunday night’s episode”, Weiss, 45, said in a pre-taped sketch. Martin has known the true meaning behind Hodor’s name since introducing the character in the first novel of the saga, A Game of Thrones.
For many fans it was a spoiler as details about the plot twist at the end of the episode spread online.
In the latest instalment of the show’s “Inside the Episode”, Benioff and Weiss revealed that Hodor’s story came straight from George R.R. Martin himself.
And now Benioff and Weiss have divulged further on that conversation, telling Entertainment Weekly that Martin’s revelations included “three holy shit moments”. The episode brought over a few explanations that were long overdue, including the mystery behind Hodor’s name.
“We should’ve seen that coming”, added Benioff with a sigh.
“The interesting thing is it’s kinda left open”, said the actor.
Spoilers follow below, on the off chance that you’ve somehow survived nearly an entire work week without seeing any Game of Thrones spoilers. It’s implied. So who knows? Stannis Baratheon, an iron throne hopeful at the time, burned his daughter alive on a pyre as an offering to the Lord of Light (you can thank Melisandre for that) to strengthen his army.
