A man was arrested after a security scare at the Cologne-Bonn worldwide airport in western Germany which resulted in flights being grounded.

German media desribed the person as a man wearing red pants and around 5 ft 11 ins tall.

As a precaution, they shut down departures from the airport terminal in the meantime, including calling back planes that were already on the tarmac.

A spokesperson for the airport was not immediately available to provide further details on the ongoing alert.

A US congressional panel heard this week that more than 70,000 American Airlines customers missed their flights this year and 40,000 checked bags failed to be loaded on scheduled flights because of airport screening delays.

The airport said that traffic had not been stopped altogether, saying Terminal 2 services had continued. Police were able to find her and determined that she had simply been in a rush to catch her plane, but that incident meant delays for about 1,000 travelers.
