The Bryan Singer-directed X-Men filled the multiplexes with a cast of mutants that included newcomers Sophie Turner and Tye Sheridan, along with franchise marquee names such as Jennifer Lawrence and Michael Fassbender.

Apocalypse was hurt by harsh reviews, scoring a paltry 48% positive critical rating on the review aggregation website RottenTomatoes.com, while audiences graded it an A- at CinemaScore.
The Marvel Comics-based movie opened with sales of $65 million in United States and Canadian theaters over the first three days of the Memorial Day weekend, ComScore, Inc. said on Sunday in an e-mailed statement.
“X-Men: Apocalypse” took the top spot with an estimated $80 million at North American box office over the four day weekend. Through the Looking Glass fared a little better overseas with $65 million, bringing its global box office total to just under $100 million.
The restraining order Amber Heard has taken out against husband Johnny Depp doesn’t seem to have dampened enthusiasm (at least locally) for his latest movie, Alice Through The Looking Glass, with the sequel to 2010’s Alice in Wonderland narrowly beating Fox’s X-Men: Apocalypse at the Australian box office over the weekend.
The film was panned by critics, who gave it a 30% score on review site Rotten Tomatoes. He added that the movie’s performance was also affected by a “tumultuous” week surrounding Depp. While Fox had hoped the movie would match X-Men: Days of Future Past’s Memorial Day haul of $110 million, the studio had conservatively estimated the movie would bring in $85 million on opening weekend.
The film cost about $170 million to make, according to Box Office Mojo.

This is a mixture of people deciding to hit the beach and pool parties instead of the multiplex, and that movies already in theaters are more attractive than the new releases (especially this year where movies like “Angry Birds”, “Captain America: Civil War”, and “The Jungle Book”, are still going strong). The R-rated comedy starring Zac Efron and Seth Rogen has earned $40.7 million after two weekends in theaters.
