Memorial Day Parade set for Monday, May 30

“Many times people mix up Veterans Day, Memorial Day and Armed Forces Day”, said Watson, “but they are three distinct days to honor three distinct groups of people, and this weekend is our opportunity to honor those who are no longer with us”.

Part of Memorial Day and honoring veterans who have died involves putting flags at their grave sites.

The Allen County Council of Veterans Memorial Day Parade starts at 11 a.m.at the Corner of Parnell Avenue and State Boulevard. In fact, Veterans Day is largely meant to thank LIVING veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to our national security are appreciated, and to underscore the fact that all those who served – not only those who died – have sacrificed and done their duty.

Whether surviving family and friends were present at Sunday’s ceremonies or the American Legion was speaking to an empty field, Gallagher and his crew honored each veteran.

The American Legion Post 470 in Melvin invites everyone to observe Memorial Day services at Baker cemetery, two miles east and two miles north of Melvin beginning at 10:30 AM on Monday, May 30th. The Sibley/Ocheyedan High School band will play.

The rain Monday morning has forced several communities to cancel their Memorial Day parades.

Merritt Island – Monday 9 a.m. – Memorial Day ceremony at Veterans Memorial Center, 400 South Sykes Creek Parkway. Following the breakfast, the hall will remain open for refreshments after the 11 AM VFW Memorial service across the road in Hudson Cemetery.

One way to pay homage to those who sacrificed their lives for the nation is by recognizing the national moment of remembrance, which takes place each year at 3 p.m. local time on the Monday designated as the official holiday.

The second event will be at 11 a.m.at the Veterans Memorial at Logvy Park. “Following the service we will break for lunch at VFW Post 3280, VFW Post 3015 or American Legion Post 25”.

Veterans Day and Memorial Day have different histories.

The parade starts Monday at 2 p.m. EST (1 CST). Line of march assembles at 9 a.m. starting at Cook Street.
