Hillary Clinton is the winner of the big debate that never happened
Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. salutes at a campaign rally at the Los Angeles Maritime Museum in San Pedro district of Los Angeles, Friday, May 27, 2016.

Johnston said he heard in Sanders remarks an acknowledgement that it’s “very hard to see how we could win the nomination at this point”.
Democratic Presidential candidate and former U.S. Secretary of the State Hillary Clinton holds a forum at Greenville Technical College on July 23, 2015 in Greenville, South Carolina. Because the loser of a Trump-Sanders debate would have been Clinton no matter what.
“Well, John, they will be keeping it in mind”, Sanders told host John Dickerson when asked about the effects of the report. “And what most politicians do is say, ‘I’m great; you’re awful”.
Indeed, Obama retains vast popularity with the Democratic base, including vital groups such as young people, with whom Clinton has struggled, the report noted. In the latest Fox News poll, where Trump now leads Clinton, the Sanders-only voters make it a tied race – 45 percent to 45 percent.
Speaking on ABC’s “This Week with George Stephanopoulos”, Senator Dianne Feinstein, Democrat of California, said it was time for party unity.
Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation”, in commenting on the State Department inspector general’s report that found Hillary Clinton violated the agency rules by using a private email server during her tenure as secretary of state, The Atlantic’s national correspondent Jeffrey Goldberg said, “the whole Democratic establishment sort of feels like it’s on a Bataan Death March to the nomination”.
With New Jersey set to vote next week in the final round of Democratic presidential primaries, the state’s 142 delegates could put Hillary Clinton over the top and ensure she wins the nomination – if the superdelegates pledged to her are included. Is Bernie Sanders doing damage to Hillary Clinton, hurting her chances against Donald Trump by fighting this hard, this long?
Two opinion polls last week offered different outcomes for California.
Todd told Sanders he was contradicting himself. The other put the former NY senator up by 18 percentage points.
When Sanders points out that the top 1 per cent in the USA controls more of the nation’s wealth than the bottom 90 per cent, and when he notes that the American middle class controls a smaller percentage of our nation’s wealth than the middle class in any other industrialised countries, that message resonates. “California is the big enchilada”. There is a process, people will draw their conclusions from the inspector general report.
The result: those Sanders-only voters are worth an extra five points to Clinton. He said she was “head and shoulders above” Trump and Sanders on issues around the world and could deliver for working families stuck by economic stagnation and students struggling with college loan payments. “Let’s have a debate about the future of America”.
In another sign Sanders has taken off the gloves, his campaign late Friday demanded the ouster of Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy and former Rep. Barney Frank of MA from a platform committee at the Democratic National Convention.
“The tense relations between Sanders and fellow members of the Senate Democratic Caucus”, Kim and colleague Burgess Everett note in the latter story, “raises questions as to what his interactions will be like once he returns to the Senate”.

The sad part of all this drama and intrigue is that this is the flawless message to be hitting Hillary Clinton on, but Sanders is exactly the wrong person to carry the banner. First, Dole said Trump should apologize to McCain for his remarks last summer that the Arizona senator isn’t a war hero because he was captured during the Vietnam War.
