North service returns to normal 3 days after East Harlem fire
Train delays are expected to continue this week as Metro-North crews are working around the clock to make repairs after a serious fire Tuesday damaged railroad infrastructure along the New Haven Line.

Metro-North will be back with full service in time for Friday morning’s rush hour, MTA officials said Thursday evening.
In this photo provided by Benjamin Parkin, firefighters battle a blaze at the Metro-North railroad tracks in New York, Tuesday, May 17, 2016. Columns on the east and west sides of the viaduct, which were put in place by Metro-North in the 1990s, are a newer design consisting of single monolithic blocks; they were not damaged by the fire. Crews were installing six temporary steel columns until permanent repairs could be made.
FDNY officials said on Wednesday that the cause of the fire was fuel that was accidentally spilled onto a hot generator during a refueling. NYC Transit is cross-honoring Metro-North tickets at Grand Central and those Bronx stations.
The business remained opened Wednesday after a massive blaze occurred Tuesday night under the tracks in East Harlem between East 117th and 118th streets, ruining their supplies.
“It actually doesn’t seem so bad tonight”, he remarked as fellow commuters rushed by to catch trains heading north of the city. He normally takes the 5:51 a.m. train to Grand Central. “I was only delayed like 30 minutes”.
Commuters are advised to check the Metro-North website for updates.
The cause of the fire was still under investigation, but there were questions about the storage of propane tanks – some of which were reported to have exploded during the fire – under such a vital part of infrastructure.

Metro North officials say this morning’s rush hour conditions should be nearly back to normal after a very hard few days. They are encouraging customers to work from home or find other ways to travel.
Trains ran faster during the Thursday morning rush hour compared to the day before, but continued to be crowded.
