The swimmer’s condition wasn’t immediately known, but officials said she was “breathing” and conscious when pulled from the water, officials told NBC News.

Newport Beach lifeguards, the Sheriff’s Harbor Patrol and a Huntington Beach Fire Department helicopter have been patroling the waters to see whether there is evidence of a shark in the area, said Mike Halphide, a Newport Beach lifeguard battalion chief.

The attack happened in Neptune Beach at approximately 3 p.m. local time.

The teen was taken to UF Health Jacksonville in Florida. She has multiple serious injuries to her torso and shoulder but is expected to survive, according to CBS Los Angeles.

Also on Sunday, a woman was likely bitten by a shark off the coast in California.

Mr Key said it was the first shark attack of the season at the beach.

A stretch of Corona del Mar State Beach was evacuated after a woman was possibly bitten by a shark.

Many beachgoers in this place have reported shark sightings and attacks in this area, but as of now, no official confirmation has been made by authorities. Experts are predicting there will be another hike in shark attacks this summer as well.

However, two more similar, non life-threatening incidents were recorded at the weekend involving an 11-year-old girl and a 57-year-old woman. If so, it would follow a trend that began past year when 98 people around the world were bitten by sharks, setting the world record for attacks.
