Mets will let Matt Harvey work through his problems on the mound

Mets: RHP Jacob DeGrom (3-1, 3.07) takes the mound Friday as NY hosts the Dodgers and LHP Alex Wood (1-3). The 66-year old veteran manager said he hadn’t really thought about whether he’d manage again before taking this job and when asked about the similarities between managing superstars Barry Bonds and Bryce Harper at different stages of their careers, he said, “Both have great vision”. I think we are playing good ball. He threw five two starts ago against the Brewers and then 13 against the Nationals. The right-hander has yielded 16 earned runs and 31 hits over his last three outings.

Manager Terry Collins defended Harvey’s decision not to talk to the media Wednesday, saying, “Not everybody’s the same in life”. According to Stephen Whyno of AP, Colon’s back was bothering him, so going for a hit wasn’t worthwhile. “He is still human, and saying nothing is better than the wrong thing”. It was a lot of pitches in a five-day span.

Wright said he hasn’t spoken to Harvey about the incident yet because he wants to give him “a little space”. “It is location. The ball to Murphy was a ball over the plate. You have to make pitches”. He hopes to return Friday, Collins said. “He has to continue to work on the command of it”. The Nationals evened the three-game series heading into the finale Wednesday afternoon.

Texas rookie Nomar Mazara homered in his home park for the first time, after six long shots on the road. The most surprising one today has to be David Wright and how he FINALLY comes through with two men on base with the Mets trailing.

The rest of the rotation has since picked things up after the series loss to the Nationals gave the Mets six defeats in seven games.

Collins believes Harvey’s body has not recovered from pitching a career-high 216 innings in 2015, his first season back after 2013 Tommy John surgery.

His changeup missed in the fourth when he allowed two home runs. The Nationals scored three runs in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead.

YANKEES 6, BLUE JAYS 0: For the first time since the second week of the season, NY is back at.500. “Murphy is the acquisition of the year”.

I asked Collins about Harvey’s struggles after Thursday’s game and he said people have high expectations for this young pitching staff and when they struggle and people wonder, “What’s wrong, what’s wrong, what’s wrong…”

Harvey gave up five runs and eight hits over five rocky innings.

Mets: SS Asdrubal Cabrera was removed from the lineup after the first pitch because of back spasms. The Nationals managed just four hits against him. “We were able to execute our plan (against Harvey)”, said Murphy. “Accountability is big and I think [Harvey] just had a bit of a lapse in judgement”. NOTES: Between May 9 and Tuesday, the Nationals’ bullpen has not allowed 22 inherited runners to score.

Matz has never faced the Nationals (28-18), who counter with Tanner Roark as he seeks to stay unbeaten against the Mets (26-19).

Harvey, who is 3-7 with a 6.08 ERA, shunned reporters in late March because he was upset over headlines about his bladder infection – which the pitcher said was the result of not urinating frequently enough.

The New York Mets are in second place in the National League East just 1 ½ games behind the first place Washington Nationals
