Sharks forward Patrick Marleau will not receive any supplementary discipline for his hit on the Penguins’ Bryan Rust.

Rust left the ice, came back for one more shift, then did not play for the rest of the game.

The veteran center was penalized for a hit to the head of Pittsburgh Penguins forward Bryan Rust on Monday night, but he will not face supplemental discipline, an National Hockey League official told Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “I didn’t want to get too up high”, he said. Rust is considered day-to-day with an upper-body injury. May. Part of what made the hit worse for Rust was the fact he was hunched over as Marleau came through to deliver the check. Pierre LeBrun reports that the NHL Department of Player Safety thought the two-minute minor for an illegal hit to the head was sufficient enough for Marleau.

We never like to see players – especially rookies having marvelous postseasons – injured on a play that involves the head.

You hope Rust will be able to return at some point in the series, but it will be interesting to see whether he will be able to go tomorrow night, and what kind of adjustments the Penguins will make if he’s unable to.

Rust scored his sixth goal of the post-season in the first period to open the scoring for the Penguins.
