Chris Evans Defends His Top Gear

The new series of Top Gear kicked off on Sunday and let’s just say it divided opinion.

He wrote: “The new Top Gear is a hit”.

The season premiere drew an audience of between 4.3 and 4.4 million viewers, a figure that is expected to rise with repeat and on-demand viewings this week. The debut episode of the relaunched series aired in the US on Monday, May 30, at 9 p.m. ET on BBC America.

For the past 39 years, Top Gear has been one of the top entertaining shows in Britain and it was taken to new heights by its former hosts, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May.

The motoring programme, fronted by Chris alongside Matt LeBlanc, played to 4.4 million viewers when it made its comeback over the weekend; below the 5 million barrier that Chris himself had set just days earlier. I agree Evans is annoying but I thought Le Blanc was really good! In one, he claimed that the show’s audience grew throughout the hour and was the most watched item on iPlayer. Others suggest new co-host Matt LeBlanc doesn’t quite fit with British humor, further reinforcing a “staged” and “scripted” feel.

The opening episode included Evans and co-host Matt LeBlanc racing from London to Blackpool, a dogfight between American muscle cars in Nevada, and a British-built off-road desert buggy chase across a desert.

“I think we’re lucky to have this and then Clarkson’s new show on Amazon Prime, I will be tuning into both on a frequent basis”.

The moment Top Gear fans have all been waiting for has come and gone.

They are also among the lowest for a series opener in years, and nearly half the 8.4 million Top Gear attracted at its peak for an appearance by F1 driver Lewis Hamilton in 2007.
