Angry Birds, which features the voices of Sean Penn, Jason Sudeikis, Blake Shelton, Danny McBride, Josh Gad, Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage, and singer Charlie XCX, managed to oust reigning US box office leader Captain America: Civil War, which drops to the runner-up slot after earning another $33.1 million (£23 million).

The Angry Birds movie is flying high after debuting at the top of the US box office.

“Captain America: Civil War” slipped to second place after an impressive run atop the box office. This weekend bumped it up and over the $1 billion mark worldwide after being in theaters for a mere four weeks.

The massive marketing campaign featured tie-ins with more than 100 partners. Despite this, the film flew to a strong domestic opening bringing in $39 million its first weekend. That should be good enough to land the film a weekend take of around $38 million to $41 million.

The sequel, directed by Nicholas Stoller, sees the return of Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne and Zac Efron. The global weekend total is an estimated $6 million for an global gross of $30 million and a worldwide tally of $51.8 million.

The weekend’s third new release, Warner Bros.’ Nice Guys helmed by Shane Black, earned an estimated $3.9 million Friday as it heads towards between $10 million and $11 million for the weekend. I expect this is the last week that The Jungle Book will be in the TOP 5 as two major franchise films are hitting screens next week.

Set in 1970s Los Angeles, The Nice Guys follows down-on-his-luck private eye Holland March (Ryan Gosling) and hired enforcer Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe), who must work together to solve the case of a missing girl and the seemingly unrelated death of a porn star. This is actually the video game adaptation’s third week in release, with the new domestic and overseas estimates bringing its global total up to $94 million.
