Uganda to Stop Military Cooperation with N.Korea
The business meetings were arranged on the occasion of South Korean President Park Geun-hye’s African tour.

In the last three years, South Korea exported $350,000 worth of light military equipment to Uganda, effectively easing the country’s reliance on the North. The efforts seem to have finally paid off.

“As a country, we aspire to be such a people and we look at the Republic of South Korea as proof that with the right investment, anything is possible”. During that visit he held extensive discussions with Korean leaders centering on further promoting relations between Seoul and Kampala especially in the economic and trade sectors.
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni pledged in a summit with Park that Uganda will suspend security and military cooperation with the North. Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn expressed his support for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, while Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta pledged to faithfully implement UN Security Council sanctions on Pyongyang.
South Korea – which has become a donor country from a key recipient of U.N. aid in half a century – has been sharing its development experience with developing nations.
“President Museveni said Uganda would enforce the UN Security Council resolutions, adding that the government had already been given orders to disengage with North Korea on police and other military engagements”, Uganda’s State House said in a statement late on Sunday.
DPRK has been training Uganda’s police and the military attracting worldwide criticism that it should respect the United Nations sanctions imposed on DPRK.
North Korea has been training the Ugandan security forces in physical fitness, marine warfare and weapons handling, and senior leaders from North Korea have visited Uganda over the years.
She said Korea has an advantage in heavy industries while Kenya has an advantage in light industries such as textile.

Uganda’s decision to end ties with North Korea wasn’t one taken lightly.
