Facebook says the goal of these new emoji isn’t to just represent the diversity of its users, but to make the experience uniform across iOS and Android. There are now more female emoji characters, including a female police officer, runner and swimmer; as well as ” gender-agnostic options and multi-colored emojis”. Oh, did we mention Facebook created red-headed emojis as well? They’re making it easy to find the right character with a new emoji picker to the left of the composer that lets users toggle between the regular text keyboard and the emoji one. Users will be able to pick the skin color they will most frequently use and set that as a default choice, which can be changed in settings at any time.

“We’re diversifying the genders to create a more balanced mix that’s more representative of our world”, the company said in a blog post.

However, not all platforms have kept up with emoji standards as they’ve evolved – which means sometimes the emoji you wanted to send isn’t available, something facebook says it can fix. In other words, iPhone or Android, your emojis will always come out looking the same in Messenger, no matter the device.
