Electricity finally back on for all in downtown Long Beach

About 70 Southern California Edison customers in Downtown Long Beach were still without power Saturday morning as the power company scrambles to restore service following an underground vault explosion on Thursday.

As of about 6:10 p.m., at least 30,000 Southern California Edison customers were without power, according to utility spokeswoman Susan Cox.

This is the second time in a matter of weeks vaults have caught fire, with the force of the first incident sending manhole covers flying into the air.

Crews have started making repairs based on the inspections, according to the release.

All but four were inspected, according to Long Beach city officials. “However, there still aren’t any answers as to what the cause was for the original outage or this secondary outage”, Gerot said.

About 150 technicians worked on repairs, and 10 generators provided power to 190 Edison customers, including businesses and residents, Saturday morning. “So we’ll be continuing to work with SCE to try to get those answers, and SCE wants those answers as well to prevent any future occurrences”.

The findings were unclear, but officials initially estimated power would be restored late Friday afternoon if no additional problems were found.

It wasn’t known exactly when all power would be restored, but the utility said some customers will continue to be without electricity into Friday, the Times report said.

The interim generators provided by SCE were working Friday but there was concern that the cause of the explosions still have not been pinpointed. As crews transition customers from the underground network system to the generators, residents will experience another outage that should last about 45 minutes.
