Memorial Day: A day to honor and remember those that gave their lives not only for their families, but for generations to come.
For decades, Memorial Day was “a solemn day of mourning (and) a sacred day of remembrance to honor those who paid the ultimate price for our freedoms”, as the nonprofit usmemorialday.org aptly states.
The first Memorial Day was held on May 5, 1866, honoring all those who died in the civil war.
“It’s a very tight brother and sister bond here with our fellow veterans”, said Ken Hammond who is a veteran.
Garvas said the Vietnam War was a time when people still cared about one another.
Flag Day, Independence Day, birthdays for presidents and noted leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr., Veterans Day and Memorial Day are all great examples.
For lots of Bay Area students, Memorial Day means a three day weekend.
“We have to be there for their families”, Mr. Obama said.
“In 2003 I was 22 years old and stood vast at the sound of engines idling on the Kuwait, Iraq border”, he said.
“This Memorial Day commemorates the 50th anniversary since the Vietnam War”, said Rev. Michael Stuart, chaplain for the Joint Veterans Organizations Council of Genesee County and a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War, during the invocation.

Colaresi told those gathered that 1,000 American flags were placed on the graves of veterans earlier in the week. Memorial Day speeches were given and prayers (were) offered up. “My chief that taught me in the navy is right beside me, but I think the navy, I think any service is important to every girl because they learn how to be themselves. We gave lives”, said Garvas. Men and women of all backgrounds fought and died because they took an oath to defend their country from those who wished to harm it.
