IOC confident on US 2024 Olympic bid despite Boston pullout

“We got an update on the latest progress in regard to construction of the different venues, including the Olympic Village”.

What is worse LA’s bid, however strong, would be following the disastrous bids of New York for 2012 and Chicago for 2016, both first round losers in spite of the presence at the vote of America’s political giants, Clinton and Obama.

Boston 2024 officials have declined to answer specific questions, only saying in a statement they’re “winding down” their operations and that they expect
to release a final report, though when
is unclear.

“Some of the analysis, especially around the economic development opportunities that were rolled out in that proposal, and some of the transportation initiatives”, says Governor Baker, “I think were pretty thoughtful and are things that we can learn from and incorporate into our own activity going forward”.

“But then when we come to the stands, I am sure we will all be overwhelmed by the hospitality and the enthusiasm of the Brazilians”, he added.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti was quick to say the Southern California city was still interested, although his office has not spoken to members of the USOC.

Los Angeles was looking to join London as the only cities to host the Summer Olympics three times. Member countries of the worldwide Olympic Committee (IOC) have already adopted the Olympic Agenda 2020 although it was only agreed last December. It was viewed as the safest, but maybe not the sexiest, choice. While it’s a familiar pick, the city has experienced Olympic leadership, several venues already in place and far less entrenched opposition. Docs that are recently-released demonstrate that managers downplayed the likelihood of a state referendum around the games and underrated the total amount of resistance. The new plan got a blowtorch towards the common idea of a Olympics that were walkable, alternatively scattering settings around the condition as well as the metro area. The only cities left standing are in authoritarian countries where public dissent could not crush the bid. And claims – backed by an intricate and confusing set of insurance policies – that the public wouldn’t be on the hook for the multibillion-dollar sports event never gained traction.

In a letter to the USOC dated October 24, 2014, Walsh said he had reviewed the “most recently available” host city contract and “hereby confirm the ability of the City of Boston to sign the Host City Contract with the USOC”.

That was replicated by the headline at a rapidly arranged announcement meeting Monday of Walsh.

Poll numbers that were in the 30s moved into the 40s, but didn’t show many signs of improving anytime soon.

San Francisco had previously been taken out of contention as a solo host city by Boston on January 8th.

Walsh told the Globe he was mad the USOC leadership did not call him with the news.
