1860s baseball card fetches $179000 at auction of sports memorabilia
The torch is the first major piece of Jenner memorabilia to go to auction since the victor of the 1976 Olympic decathlon became arguably the most famous transgender person in the world.

Eight years later, Jenner was recruited by Bob Lorsch to run the final 1,000 meters Lake Tahoe stretch of the torch relay for the 1984 Olympics – and now Lorsch has put the torch up for auction.
The Brooklyn Atlantics team card from around 1860 was sold at Heritage Auction’s Platinum Night Sports Auctions, which coincides with the 2015 National Sports Collectors Convention in Chicago.

The torch, which was purchased by an anonymous Midwest collector, was among the highlights of the auction held by Heritage Auctions in Chicago. It’s being sold by a Massachusetts woman whose great-great-uncle is among the players pictured on the card.

The Atlantics have been a founding member of the Nationwide Affiliation of Base Ball Gamers – the game’s first organized league that held the championship from 1859 via 1861. The card was passed down to her from her mother, who inherited it from other relatives.
