2 people shot on UCLA campus, school says

William S. Klug, a professor of mechanical engineering, was gunned down in an engineering building office, according to a law enforcement official. The shooting suspect, or suspects, have not been identified yet. Who is the UCLA shooter? He described the professor as “a very lively, lovable, likable guy”.

About an hour after the shooting was reported, police confirmed two dead people were found inside a small room of the engineering building.

Twenty-one-year-old Jeremy Peschard says Wednesday’s lockdown felt “eerily similar” to May 23, 2014, when he was locked down in a dorm at UC Santa Barbara. It was unclear if the two men were employees, students or visitors.

Authorities confirmed the campus was officially safe shortly after a news conference that took place around noon. “We have a lot of resources here that we’re dedicating to ensure the safety of the campus community”, Herren said.

Waugh said he was pleased with the campus alert system that quickly texted and emailed people about the danger.

People on campus posted updates to Twitter; a GIS coordinator at the school said the shooter was in his building, but he was safe and “kinda scared.”

They tied one end of a long cord to the doorknob and the other end to a chair bolted to the floor.

Umar Rehman, 21, was in a math sciences classroom adjacent to Engineering IV, the building where the shooting took place. Classes were canceled for the rest of Wednesday, but are expected to resume Thursday.

The shooting occurred Wednesday morning in an office where the bodies of two men were found.

With huge numbers of LAPD and campus police mobilized for the shooting in Los Angeles, UM campus police said they were aware of the incident. He also said it was possible there was a suicide note at the scene, but said this could not be confirmed. Chloe Pan, a second-year undergraduate and RA of her campus dorm, told VICE News that she woke up to news of the shooting. “So I said it out loud”, she said. Both LAPD and UCLA police began a search for suspects and victims.

A department statement adds only that the victims are male.

Before the all clear, teams of officers searched buildings as students emerged with their hands in the air and police patted them down and searched backpacks. No identities have been released and it is not known if victims are students.

The 419-acre campus is on lockdown. It’s now the week before final exams.
