Google yet to build smartphones on its own: Sundar Pichai

Pichai also mentioned that Google will be putting more thought into Nexus down the line, so perhaps being more opinionated also means they’ll be looking to transcend beyond just offering up the very best of Android and that Nexus devices in the future will be delivering a more thoughtful experience to the user.

Pichai was interviewed by Walt Mossberg during Recode’s Code Conference at Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. on Wednesday. You’ll see us thoughtfully add more features on top of Android on Nexus phones. We get Google’s vision for the operating system without the bloat, the newest versions the quickest (which means new features first), and direct and swift updates from Google. “There’s a lot of software innovation to be had”, Pichai said (via The Verge).

Design & Trend reported back in April that Google has partnered with HTC for this year’s new Nexus devices, codenamed Marlin and Sailfish. While Google being more involved in the future of Nexus could take on many forms, the rumored absence of OEM branding on upcoming devices is a big change, no matter how small it seems, as it could signify the beginning of more control for Google when it comes to Android. In short, Pichai said that Google is investing more in Nexus and sees areas that they can really improve upon stock Android through Nexus devices, as weird as that sounds. During the chat, the conversation moved over to Google’s Nexus line of devices and where it’s headed. The most likely date is anywhere within the month of October, which fits squarely within the third quarter time period, though September is also a viable candidate if previous Google Nexus releases are any indication.
