‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ No. 1; ‘Alice Through the Looking Glass’ bombs

X-Men: Apocalypse opened with $80 million for the long Memorial Day weekend, destroying competition that included Alice Through the Looking Glass, which disappointed with $34.2 million over four days.

“20th Century Fox has put out a new Quicksilver-centric television spot for X-Men: “Apocalypse, touting that it is the “#1 MOVIE IN THE WORLD”. Critics weren’t as kind as they were with the first Alice revival film in 2010, with just 30 percent giving positive reviews, according to Rottentomatoes. Johnny’s representatives have blasted the accusations, but that didn’t stop film fans from threatening to boycott the movie as the #StandWithAmber and #imwithamber hashtags started trending on social media on Friday (27May16).

Depp, 52, faces divorce proceedings by his wife of just over a year, Amber Heard.

“Alice Through the Looking Glass” did particularly well in China, where it generated an estimated $27.1 million.

The past two weeks have not been easy for actor Johnny Depp, who is now facing charges for domestic abuse.

“The personal life drama or controversies of the talent involved [in a film] – no matter how unfortunate – historically has had no discernible or measurable effect on box office”, said Paul Dergarabedian, senior analyst at ComScore. “The Angry Birds Movie” has a global estimated total of $223.5 million for the two weeks it has been in release.

“It’s a disappointing result”, said Dave Hollis, distribution chief for Disney. “We have embarked on a branded tentpole strategy that makes big bets. “But when you make big bets, there are times when you have results that are disappointing”. Captain America: Civil War added $15.1 million to its now-$372.6 million domestic haul, while Zac Efron’s abs in Neighbors 2 made $9.1 million. It stars “X-Men” regulars Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and others, but it introduces a number of newcomers, including Oscar Isaac, Tye Sheridan and Olivia Munn. He has Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales due to open on Memorial Day Weekend 2017, and if that fails, I’m not exactly sure Hollywood is going to trust him with any more tentpole releases.

The film cost $170 million to produce, and has been ravaged by critics, although it nabbed an A- CinemaScore from moviegoers.

By this logic, it really doesn’t matter how much money Deadpool, Batman v Superman, Captain America: Civil War or anything else made – with the exception of the previous X-Men movies.
