Mariners place Felix Hernandez on 15-day DL

The Padres are 1-6 on the excursion after being pounded 9-3 by the Mariners on Monday in the opener of a four-game, home-and-home series that shifts to San Diego on Wednesday. Nelson Cruz (.289, 26 Rs, 10 HRs, 33 RBIs) played well again yesterday, going 2 for 4 with one run and one RBI. Myers and Yangervis Solarte each had three.

Fowler’s exasperation was on display during a radio interview with ESPN’s The Mighty 1090 in San Diego on Wednesday, one day after the team was drubbed 16-4 in Seattle to conclude a 1-7 road trip.

Rea (3-2, 4.47 ERA) gave up three runs in five innings of a 9-5, 17-inning loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 22 in his last start for the Padres. The Mariners have scored 31 runs in their last three games and four or more runs in 10 of their last 12 games. Generally, when a position player pitches, they’re just chucking fastballs up there in the mid-80s to low-90s and hoping to get the ball over the plate.

Seattle Mariners ace Felix Hernandez was placed on the disabled list with a calf strain, the team announced Wednesday.

After three straight days of mediocre performances from its starting rotation, Seattle needed Nathan Karns to eat up some innings and give the Mariners relievers some rest. The most damaging was the second inning where Luis Sardinas’ single with two outs quickly became a six-run inning. The Mariners scored six times in the second inning, capped by Seager’s three-run shot. “It wasn’t Paxton’s night”. “Those (first) five innings were as good a five innings as he’s pitched all year”. Smith, who was not charged with an error on the play, made up for the drop with an RBI double in the bottom of the inning.

Miley (5-2, 4.95) is coming off back-to-back rough outings, though.

“I would certainly like to give him another opportunity”, Servais added.

Shields could call it quits, retire, and go live on an island if he really wanted to. “He certainly had velocity tonight, but he needs another pitch to get them off the fastball”.

Ramirez is the first Padre to record a multi-homer game at Petco Park since Melvin Upton Jr. did so on August 18, 2015 vs. Atlanta (per Jeff Praught). He also hit a two-run homer off Steve Johnson in the sixth, after Derek Norris hit a leadoff double. Also connecting for a HR in this one was 1B Dae-Ho Lee (.267 AVG) for his seventh on the season. Look for Seattle to find a way to put some runs together and get a win. He struck out four and walked four.
