Michael Carrick is “hopeful” that newly-appointed Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho will hand him a new one-year deal to stay at Old Trafford next season.

He replaced Louis van Gaal at United after the Red Devils parted ways with the Dutchman just days after he helped them win the FA Cup. “He has won trophies and inspired players in countries across Europe and, of course, he knows the Premier League very well, having won three titles here”, he said.

Their five-month mutual pursuit ended when Mourinho signed a three-year contract. Jose brought that immediately, which led to the first title in 50 years, in that first season – that’s the ability he has.
