Google Confirms Android Apps Will Soon Be Arriving On Chrome OS

Users will be able to just click on the Play Store icon on their Chromebook dock and search for apps exactly like they would on an Android.

If Chromebooks aren’t your thing because they aren’t specced high enough then you’ll be happy to hear that Google plans to cater to a larger market with high-end Chromebooks. However, there’s one serious knock against them: a lack of major apps and games built for Chrome OS.

As more and more people move away from the desktops, for both business and pleasure, the way we access our digital life is continuing to evolve. To be fair, it has even excluded its own original Chromebook Pixel 2013 model, which includes a touch screen display (useful for Android), from the support list.

For the first time, the shipments of Google’s Chromebook devices surpassed that of rival Apple’s Mac laptops and PCs in the USA in the first quarter of 2016, said IDC analyst Linn Huang while talking to The Verge. Google further promises that the apps running on Android smartphones and tablets will also run on the Chromebooks. It’s worth mentioning here that not every single Chromebook out in the wild will be able to run the Play Store. People have been moving away from programs and browsers as well, and that’s where app developers like Adobe come in. Also, the Mountainview-based tech firm promises to bring Google Play to other Chromebook devices in future.

Google I/O 2016 is over, but that doesn’t mean the excitement has to stop as we’ll be hearing more about everything from the annual developer conference many more times over the next few months or more.

The blog post announcing the news also hinted that there will be new devices coming soon, designed for this crossover of the Play Store.
