Authorities received a distress call for a man who was overboard around 10:00 p.m. Saturday night about 44 miles east of Cape May, N.J., which is located at the bottom tip of the state. He was thrown a life preserver and soon hoisted from the water.
Chief Moore says the man and woman were out on a leisure ride when the accident happened. Dale said a faulty alternator was the source of the problem.
A Coast Guard helicopter crew from Atlantic City made an emergency landing at a Staten Island golf course on Sunday morning because of smoke and fumes in the cockpit, a spokeswoman said.
He was taken to Carteret General Hospital in Morehead City.
The Coast Guard’s pollution response team, including a helicopter crew, went to the site to investigate.

The Coast Guard did not return a message for comment Sunday afternoon for an update on the victim’s condition and how he was stranded in the water.
