– Mookie Betts, who had five homers in his previous two games, failed to hit one out in the series finale.

“That’s when you know it’s Twilight Zone night”, Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. “Actually, when it happened I said, ‘We might have a shot.’ He’s one of the best second basemen you’ll ever see”.

WHITE SOX 2, METS 1 (13) Pitcher Matt Albers doubled leading off the 13th inning for his first hit since 2007 and scored the tiebreaking run, his first major league run, as the Chicago White Sox rallied past the New York Mets, helped by Todd Frazier’s major league-leading 17th home run.

“I missed it”, Pedroia said.

Betts 12 home runs rank second on the team behind David Ortiz, who has 14. “They’re just going over the fence right now”.

It was the kind of game where the score was already 8-7 after three innings – the first time this season that two teams had each scored at least seven runs during the first three frames. “You make errors sometimes”.

NATIONALS 7, PHILLIES 2 Max Scherzer had 11 strikeouts in eight sharp innings, Wilson Ramos hit a three-run home run and visiting Washington beat Philadelphia to complete a three-game sweep. Darren O’Day gave up the Young homer in two-thirds of an inning before Zach Britton registered the final four outs for his 15th save.

In the second, Young hit a two-run shot to left, and Betts followed two batters later with his second homer of the game, a solo blast to left that tied the game at 4.

Manager John Farrell said of Kelly: “Blessed with the golden arm and excellent stuff”.

Red Sox starter Rick Porcello went six innings and gave up five runs and six hits, including a career-high tying three homers. Yes, he has a history of trouble with the long ball, but pitches he threw to right fielder Mark Trumbo (twice) and center fielder Adam Jones weren’t necessarily poorly located; two good hitters just smashed them out of the yard.

It was the kind of game where the Orioles put up four runs in the first inning – the first time in nearly a year that they tallied four-plus runs in the opening inning. The shortstop went 2-for-5 with three RBIs and a run. Tolliver retired Betts on Tuesday when he needed a home run to tie the big league record of four in a game.

The Orioles also had lost Monday with their No. 1 starter (Chris Tillman) on the mound, so what really were the prospects for the two games left to be started by struggling Mike Wright and Jimenez. The Red Sox lead the major leagues with a. 296 batting average, but the pitching must get better.

Orioles: There’s no timetable for the return of C Caleb Joseph, who was placed on the DL with a testicular injury Tuesday after getting hit by a foul ball. “There’s a lot of unknown here”, Showalter said.

Betts gave the Red Sox a 1-0 lead when he homered off Wright on the right-hander’s second pitch of the night.

Orioles: Ubaldo Jimenez (2-6, 6.36) could lose his spot in the rotation if he can’t turn around a skid of three starts in which he’s gone 0-3 with an 11.57 ERA.
