Police say the man who holed up in their home chose it randomly.

Fremont firefighters investigate the scene after a suspect in the shooting of two police officers barricaded himself in a home on Roberts Avenue near Washington Boulevard in Fremont, Calif., on Thursday, June 2, 2016.

“He told us he had a gun, so we (were) not in any hurry”, said Alameda County Sheriff’s Sgt. Ray Kelly.

Bosques told reporters that the home did not belong to Villabrille and the homeowner was not inside at the time.

The home is within the containment perimeter set up following the shooting.

The first shooting occurred following a traffic stop in Fremont – about 30 miles southeast of downtown San Francisco – at around 1:30 p.m. local time on Wednesday.

After attempting to negotiate with the attempted homicide suspect, police began to release gas into the home to try to flush him out.

They later said they were searching for an armed man wearing a San Francisco Giants shirt, and asked residents to shelter in place while police went from house to house.

Bosques said the suspect was “given many opportunities to come out” of the home during the hours-long standoff, but “refused to do so”.

Another police officer was injured in the second shooting.

The officers from the Fremont Police Department were shot Wednesday afternoon after a traffic stop turned violent, prompting a manhunt that involved a house to house search that lasted well into the night.

Police are unable to confirm if the suspect was injured in the encounter.

Villabrille’s body was later found inside.

Police believe the suspect was shot and wounded in the gunfight with the patrol officer, based on witness statements and a “large pool of blood”.

One officer was then rushed to a trauma center, and the suspect fled on foot.

Both officers are out of surgery.

The barricaded suspect then called 911 and told the officers he had a woman hostage.

The second officer, who has served 10 years as a detective, was in stable condition after being shot twice.

Meanwhile the department members are reeling from the injury of their two officers, as they hope for the recovery of the officer who remains in critical condition. Police are working to determine whether the suspect may have had accomplices. The Chronicle reports that around 2 a.m. tear gas was shot into the house, and it was shortly thereafter that the house caught fire.
