Hodgson said: “Rashford’s had that fantastic end to the season and he’s a very, very interesting player”.

Ex-England winger Trevor Sinclair said: “For me Drinkwater has had such a good season and played such a pivotal part in Leicester’s success, he deserves to be in the squad”.

Roy Hodgson admits it was hard to leave Danny Drinkwater our of Euro 2016 but says he favoured taking more attacking players. “For a long period of time, if anything, we haven’t had an enormous amount of choice”. “We think we have got a lot of good quality football players travelling with us. I like him and he’s going to be a real player in the future”, the former Tottenham boss told Sky Sports News.

“They were unbelievably disciplined and professional about the whole thing, and of course they ended by wishing everybody well and even saying they enjoyed the preparation time”.

“Once again I think we have gone for reputation rather than fitness and form”, he wrote in his blog for Coral. The Newcastle United-player only got to play a total of 15 minutes in both friendly matches and his call-up for the England squad seems to more of a reward for a great seasonthan anything else.

Hodgson’s decision means England will have three goalkeepers, seven defenders, eight midfielders and five forwards in France – a group including teenage sensation Rashford.

Leading the squad is Harry Kane, who was crowned as the Premier League’s top scorer last season. We believe defending is a team job.

England, who face Portugal on Thursday (Friday NZT) in their last warm-up match before the tournament, are in Group B with Russia, Wales and Slovakia.

Although Reid is positive about the England team going forward, he does have concerns over the defence, which is why he believes Roy Hodgson should set his team up with two holding midfielders.

“I’m comfortable that, whatever way we want to play, we’ll be covered”.
