Zika virus infects slew of pregnant women in NYC
Miami-Dade County has the highest number of confirmed cases in the state with 46 cases, Broward is second with 17 cases.

Previously, officials had reported how many pregnant women had both Zika symptoms and tested positive for the disease on blood tests.
CDC’s Dr. Margaret Honei said this means there is a need to cast “a broad net to make sure we are monitoring all pregnant women who may be at risk for poor outcomes associated with Zika”.
Researchers say the new system will create a better understanding of the range of problems the virus inflicts in utero. However, only 49% remains consistent with the expected symptoms like rash and fever.
The Centers for Disease Control announced Friday that it has changed how it reports cases of Zika among pregnant women.
Zika is carried by the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
“We want to be able to feel safe and secure, and families who are of child-bearing years want to feel as if they can have confidence that, when they travel, when they want to start a family, that this is not an issue”. Beginning today, based on the new CDC guidance, Florida’s case count of pregnant woman is 36. That’s in addition to more than 120 women affected by Zika in US territories, mainly Puerto Rico. Congress is locked in a battle over $1.1 billion in funding for Zika research, vaccine development and awareness campaigns.
“We closely monitor pregnant women through the duration of their pregnancy”, said spokeswoman Carolina Rodriquez.
In New York City every known case of a Zika infection has been because of worldwide travel to central and south america.
“It is not known why the virus has become so much more aggressive since it was first described in 1947”. “Two of those women entered into our pregnancy registry”. Zika causes an array of birth abnormalities, from the shrunken heads and brain defects of microcephaly to miscarriages and still births.
Each Thursday, the agency will update the number of infected pregnant women in the United States, officials said.

The president also said that all of the 500 cases diagnosed in the US all are “travel related”, – or contracted elsewhere and brought via the infected person to the U.S. Three Maricopa County residents who visited Latin America have been diagnosed with Zika infections and state officials expect more cases this summer.
