Heavy rainfall in North, South Odisha ahead

The depression over Bangladesh, which moved west-northwest and lay centered over the Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh today, would trigger rain and thundershower in most places in northern part of the state and many places in southern part too, MeT office said.

More than ten villages in Balasore district in West Bengal still remains flooded.

The remnant of cyclone “Komen” crossed the Bangladesh border and entered India as a depression but associated heavy to very heavy rain swamped the region and triggered floods and landslides in the hills.

The cyclone Komen has devastated the northeastern and eastern states hugely while Manipur and West Bengal can be described as the worst hit areas as the nearly whole WB is facing floods and over 20 people have so far been killed in Manipur due to unswerving downpour. Among those affected people, the concerned officials have rescued over 1.1 million people to relief camps. Rivers in the district are flowing above or very close to the danger mark.

Responding to the situation, the state Irrigation and Flood Control Department has reportedly opened one control room with the number 0385-2451550 in Imphal.

Cyclone Komen, forming in the Bay of Bengal, has destroyed dozens of makeshift homes on Bangladesh’s southernmost point of Saint Martin’s island as it moves towards the coast, local police chief Ataur Rahman said.

Life has been thrown out of gear in several other states as well.

Locals said financial help from the state government has been scarce with only a few thousand rupees being given to those affected.
