Nelson struggles in Brewers’ loss to Phillies

Those watching the Milwaukee Brewers take on the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park are in for a groovy throwback.

Jonathan Villar knocked out a two-run home-run in the 9th inning to increase the Brewers lead and Chris Carter hit his 14th homer of the season.

Anderson (3-6) allowed one run and three hits, striking out six in 5 2/3 innings to help Milwaukee win its eighth straight game in Philadelphia. You can hear the game on 1150-AM WHBY with pre-game at 5:30pm and first-pitch at 6:05pm. That’s right, perfect. The Brewers are now 8-0 in the Phillies home ballpark in a streak that began three years ago Thursday. Anderson is now 2-6 with a 5.00 ERA on the season and he has given up a total of 57 hits in 54 innings.

The good news for Velasquez and the Phillies on Friday: his offensive teammates, a collection of hitters that came into the game with a MLB-low 3.09 runs per game, gave him plenty of support.

None of the Phillies have faced Guerra (3-1, 3.47 ERA), a 31-year-old rookie whose only big-league experience before May was three relief appearances last June with the White Sox. The right fielder, the only Brewer now in the top five of All-Star voting, is above his career averages and projections in nearly every offensive category and has reached base safely in 39 of his 43 games, including a career-high 29 consecutive earlier this season.

Velasquez has not pitched more than five innings in his last four starts. Ryan Braun got to the ball quickly and made a good throw to Gennett at second, but Rupp avoided Gennett’s initial tag attempt and then got his hand onto the bag after oversliding it before Gennett could again apply a tag.

The only offense the Phillies were able to generate in the game was a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning by Maikel Franco to cut the lead to 2-1, but that was it for the scoring on offense for Philly and for nearly the rest of the game.

“Any time we score six runs, it’s a big deal around here”, manager Pete Mackanin said. On Monday, Hellickson logged seven innings of one-run ball against the Nationals, striking out eight in a no-decision. “I’ve got to figure something out. My only job is to work on it tomorrow, go back to film and see what I have to do”.

Lucroy went 1 for 3 and is now batting. Velasquez pitched in just 19 games with the Houston Astros last season, and only seven of those were starts.

The first thing that jumps out here is the Phillies’ pillbox cap, a style made iconic by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
