“X-Men: Apocalypse” leads the Memorial Day weekend box office

Hopefully the home video release has a much more extensive look at how this scene was completed, especially with the small peeks of wire work that Evan Peters can be seen doing.

“X-Men: Apocalypse” took the top spot with an estimated $80 million at North American box office over the four day weekend.

Whit Stillman’s well-reviewed Jane Austen adaptation “Love & Friendship” expanded in its third weekend, adding 446 theaters and grossing $3.1 million.

Justin Chang in Variety mused: “Alice Through the Looking Glass is a movie for anyone who ever skimmed a passage of Lewis Carroll and thought, ‘This is great, but it could use a bit more ‘Terminator'”.

Estranged wife Amber Heard filed for divorce on Monday after 15 months of marriage and a Los Angeles judge granted a temporary restraining order against Depp on Friday until a hearing on domestic abuse charges is conducted on June 17. Some fans called for a boycott of “Alice Through the Looking Glass“.

“As Memorial (Day) weekends go, this was not one for the record books”, said media analyst Paul Dergarabedian, at comScore.

Speaking as a guest on CNBC, Erik Davis of Fandango suggested that the film’s poor performance was more due to bad reviews than it was to Johnny Depp’s massive PR scandal. Projected takings for the US$170 million sequel, a follow-up to Tim Burton’s 2010 Alice in Wonderland, had been significantly higher: the film was expected to make at least US$60 million.

The sequel starring Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter brought in a four day total of $34.2 million.

“It’s disappointing. The domestic opening is wildly less than what every tracking service had us at”, Disney’s Dave Hollis stated. We’ll continue to take those big bets.

Still, the film, made for $178 million, has already made $185.8 million internationally.

The film is directed by Bryan Singer, based on a story by Singer, Simon Kinberg, Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris. “It’s right on track with what our expectations were going in”.

Overall business over the weekend, according to comScore, was up about 5 percent from Memorial Day previous year when Disney’s “Tomorrowland” bombed with $33 million. Boosting ticket sales were a handful of holdovers.

“The Angry Birds Movie”, “Captain America: Civil War”, and “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising” made up the rest of the top 5 at the box office.
