You have to appreciate Stosur and the way she’s playing at the moment. “I know that she reached the final at the French Open (in 2010)”.

“Being in a quarter-final in a slam is like every player s dream”.

Putintseva, 21, the youngest player left in the draw, extended her best run at a major with a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Spanish 12th seed Carla Suarez Navarro.

Williams holds the record, at 33 years and 289 days, as the oldest female grand slam victor – something she achieved at Wimbledon last year for her 21st grand slam title.

Muguruza trailed 15-30 in the 10th game, only to pluck out two aces to set up a match point, which she converted when the Australian sent a forehand wide. She was the runner-up to her sister Serena at Roland Garros in 2002, but her most recent trip to the quarterfinals in Paris came in 2006.

“It was really tricky today”, she said.

And, having seen the likes of all-time greats Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal’s grand slam prospects written off in recent years, she takes little offence at her own critics. “Here I’m learning. Here just I’m putting everything into that and it’s going well”.

“Sure. Why not? I don’t think age is a factor that much anymore”. But Muguruza has given us no reason to bet against her this tournament and has been far more consistent with her service game.

Ever since that win over Serena in 2014, and increasingly since her run to the Wimbledon final, Muguruza has been hailed as “Serena’s heir”: Her physique and style of game clearly modeled on the queen of woman’s tennis, possessed of the explosive weapons that enable her to dictate play against the best, she has the credentials to win Slams and the tennis world waits for her to deliver.

Apparently, Samantha Stosur skips arm day at the gym. And in order to book a final place, she will have to beat an in form Sam Stosur who has been a finalist here before. “They jump really high”, she said.

‘You can have a great year or two and then you have a slump and everyone writes you off, ‘ she said to the press in Paris.

“I think even people write off Roger and Rafa”.

“Yeah, I just was not playing my best”. I always still felt like that.

“There has obviously been a few dips along the way there”. Five? I don t know.

Turn it around she has.

Stosur, who lacked her usual accuracy and power in the heavy conditions, fell 5-2 behind, leaving Muguruza to serve for the match.

“I have some problems with my calf”, she said. It will be a gripping duel.
