This is only a partial list with some of the highlights, but you can browse the full list of new emoji here on the Unicode.org website. Facebook this week introduced new emoji to better reflect skin tones and gender, along with more emoji of females – including as a police officer, runner, surfer, pedestrian, and a swimmer.

Not since the addition of cheese and the taco has there been such excitement over food-related emojis, but come June, you can now depict a proper American breakfast of bacon and eggs using only the pictures on your keyboard.

The new 1,500 designs will include dozens of gender-agnostic and multi-coloured options. Until now it was possible that a user on one platform would see Facebook’s emoji, and someone on a different platform would see the native emoji, or just a black box in some cases.

“Emojis are one of the most important ways we communicate emotion to each other”, Messenger product manager Tony Leach told USA Today.

Not all emojis were created equal, at least not when it comes to the differences between Android and iOS.

With the new emojis, Messengers users can pick the skin color they prefer which will then be their default. iOS and Android users can already do this. No, artificial intelligence and machine learning are not involved in this feature; the emoji picker simply allows you to select emojis faster with the help of a shortcut.
