One thing’s for sure, Duterte made it clear that the Philippines would be taking a different route in resolving the issue on territorial dispute, saying his administration would take a path that’s less dependent on the United States, its biggest ally in this decade-long battle for sovereignty in one of the world’s most important maritime zones.
“We would prefer that all of the claims in the South China Sea be handled through mediation and not force or coercion”, Deputy Secretary of Defense Robert Work said in March when rumors of a Chinese ADIZ first began to surface.

They also reached an understanding based on “shelving disputes and striving for joint development” in the South China Sea.
DAVAO, Philippines Philippines President-elect Rodrigo Duterte said on Thursday he would not surrender the country’s rights over the disputed Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea, which China seized in 2012.

China has noted the American partnership with the Philippines with concern and encouraged the U.S.to remain neutral in South China Sea territorial disputes.
China’s navy will send five ships to join a major U.S.-hosted naval drill this summer, even as tension mounts between the world’s two largest economies over the South China Sea.
A report from the South China Morning Post cited insiders knowledgeable with the inner workings of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) who revealed China’s plans on the South China Sea version of the ADIZ as a response to the U.S.
Three times in the past seven months, US warships deliberately have sailed close to one of those islands to exercise freedom of navigation and challenge the claims. This means that there are still risks of the government coming under heavy fire if, for example, a USA military aircraft passes through their newly set up ADIZ but the PLA is unable to adequately respond.
