Honoring the holy month of Ramadan as it approaches quickly, many can join the health benefits of fasting, which does not have to be without food or drink, from sunrise to sunset as observing Muslims do.

What is the history of Ramadan?

With this method of calculating dates, Manitoba Muslims will begin Ramadan on Monday.

“This year’s Ramadan is meaningful because it comes after the May 9 local, regional and national elections”.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar.

“The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur’an, guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion”.

Muslims across the country have been advised to look out for the new moon of Ramadan today. “Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful”. In the days and weeks before the month of fasting begins, Muslims around the world stock up on food supplies. There is also a simpler pre-dawn meal, or “suhur”. The annual event is one of the Five Pillars Of Islam.

Charity is an important part of Ramadan.

During the fast, certain actions can compromise the experience.

Muslims around the world from Indonesia to Dearborn, Michigan, to Tajikistan are preparing for the start of the holy month of Ramadan. Although there is some debate over the age at which young Muslims should begin to take part, it is typically at around ten to 12-years-old.

He pointed out that for the Muslim world, Ramadan is unlike any other time of the year; an annual event marked by more than a quarter of the world’s population, its impact on politics, economics and everyday life across the world is incalculable, and Ramadan had an impact on nearly every aspect of people’s lives.

The end of Ramadan and Eid is a big deal to Muslim colleagues. Most will break their fast alongside their families in the evening with a communal “Iftar” meal, typically often started with dates. This fasting, along with prayer and study, is a constant reminder of how those in need suffer.

The authority has also distributed a calendar showing prayer times during Ramadan across the ARMM region, where a series of activities is organized throughout the month. There is also a spiritual fast from sins like hate, envy, jealousy, selfishness and bad habits such as smoking.

Fasting during Ramadan can be risky for those with health conditions such as diabetes, Diabetes UK has warned. Rabbi Nathan Levy, a religious leader who sits on the Board of Deputies of British Jews, fasted with them and attended an iftar meal in 2014. Patients with diabetes should work with their doctors to figure out a strategy if they choose to fast.

Employers should therefore be prepared to receive requests for holiday from Muslim workers, exercise flexibility and be prepared to grant leave at short notice, which will be dependent on the sighting of the moon.

Those taking exams or working during Ramadan are NOT exempt. The six authentic compilers of hadith all relate on the authority of Abu Hurayrah (RA) who reports that the Prophet (SAW) said, “Fasting is a protection for you”.
