“I hope that Chinese citizens will not follow such rumors”, said Ma Xuliang, China’s deputy consul general in Dubai, in the wake of the incident.
A Chinese teenager was arrested by Dubai airport police on Tuesday after he was found hiding in the cargo compartment on a flight that arrived from Shanghai.
The teen told officials through a translator he jumped over a fence at Shanghai airport and climbed into the cargo hold of the plane when a security guard was not looking, the agency said.
His story has sparked debate in China over misinformation in the media – as Xu is believed he read on social media that beggars in Dubai could make 470,000 yuan (£4,900) a month.
Once back in China, Xu will be blacklisted from Dubai for life.
After a almost 10-hour flight inside the plane’s cargo compartment, he was arrested at the Dubai airport.
Xu thought that it wouldn’t matter if he was caught by the police as he’s underage, according to the report, adding that he heard prisoners get treated very well in Dubai.
Bin Thani said that the police have contacted the Chinese Consulate.
