Severe Storms Take Aim at Chicago Area

More wet weather is in the forecast late tonight, a few of which may be severe.

The utility company says “significant lightning: has resulted in power outages to its distribution system”.

In Toronto, approximately 1,000 customers across the city are without power.

I would expect a well defined line of linear convection (thunderstorms) to form into what we call a squall line, then move in to West Michigan from the northwest, through Grand Rapids, and track southeast through the evening/early overnight.

There have been several reports of trees and wires down in the area.

A significant, widespread severe weather situation is likely this afternoon and extending well into this evening. Some of those storms will probably be able to producing extreme winds, hail stones between one and two inches, and perhaps a number of tornadoes. Severe thunderstorms often can and do spawn tornadoes! “Go indoors and move away from windows and skylights”.
