Santana, Villar hit homers, Brewers beat Phillies 6-3

Villar led off the game with a home run and has homered in each of the first three games of the series while going 6-for-13 with six RBIs.TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), CSN PhiladelphiaPITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Wily Peralta (3-6, 6.51 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Aaron Nola (4-4, 2.88) Peralta is struggling to work deep into games and failed to complete six innings in any of his last four starts. Given that the score was 8-0 at the time, there was no sense in sending the young righty back out for another inning.

The Brewers look to take the series on Sunday, June 5. They’ve lost eight of nine and 12 of 15. Edwin Encarnacion added a two-run shot, and Darwin Barney and Russell Martin each had a solo homer.

David Hernandez finished the game on the mound for the Phillies with a scoreless ninth inning.

Brewers: Junior Guerra allowed three runs and six hits in six innings.

“It was very unusual”, Nola said in the clubhouse after the game. “I told the infielders I was going to give them a 1-2-3 inning at some point, but it didn’t happen”.

And it was that – his ability to work out of jams – with which manager Pete Mackanin was most impressed. Mackanin said Nola is always “calm, cool, and collected”. Back-to-back one-out singles in the second turned into runners on second and third again with a sacrifice although Nola got the hot-hitting Jonathan Villar to tap a ball back to him for an out at first. He’s got a lot of ‘stuff.’ Very good breaking ball, good fastball.

“I feel pretty good but I know you’re not supposed to be throwing this way”, said Peralta (3-7).

But, for a change, it was Franco and the rest of the Phillies hitters that stole the spotlight from Nola.

And then the Phillies broke through, scoring five runs in the fifth inning to turn the series finale into a rout. The Phillies’ previous high was three.

But maybe that had something to do with the competition? The LSU product was a tough-luck loser on Tuesday, when he was reached for two runs on a pair of solo home runs in six innings while striking out six in a game the Phillies went on to lose 5-1. Peralta comes off of a 10-3 loss against St. Louis with three runs scored on nine hits and two BB over five innings. And four of them – Herrera, Rupp, Joseph, and Paredes – had multiple hits.

However, the only guy to not record a hit – Freddy Galvis – got a special, unprompted shoutout from his manager after the game.

Milwaukee leadoff hitter Jonathan Villar stole third in the first inning, his 21st stolen base on the season. “He just wants to, as he said, he executes pitch by pitch”.

It’s a shame for the Phillies they can’t play the Brewers more often.

“It’s a little frustrating that we’re not getting the results we need”, Counsell said. He said he is feeling better at the plate and acknowledged that he could be seeing some better pitches with Tommy Joseph behind him in the order.

Thankfully, Jimmy Paredes followed that up with a three run home run of his own, followed by a Cameron Rupp bomb to left field. Hitting is contagious. It really is. “It’s the same way when everybody’s hitting”.
