Arrieta’s winning streak ends at 20 games in Cubs’ 3-2 loss

Dropping Sunday afternoon’s matchup at Wrigley Field to the Arizona Diamondbacks by the score of 3-2, Arrieta earned his first regular season loss since July 25, 2015 (24 starts).

Bradley struck out 10, eclipsing his previous career high of nine in Sunday’s win over San Diego.

Brandon Crawford had two hits and scored twice for the Giants, who lost for just the fifth time in their last 23 games. “That’s a great pitch by Edwin. he did a nice job”, Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said.

“Our relief pitching was alarming”, he said. “That’s frustrating. We’ll address that tomorrow”.

MIAMI – Jose Fernandez tied a career high with 14 strikeouts in seven scoreless innings to outpitch a resurgent Matt Harvey, and the Miami Marlins averted a series sweep by beating the shorthanded New York Mets 1-0 Sunday. The big blow was a two-run double by Yasmany Tomas in the second inning on what appeared to be a almost unhittable pitch.

Orioles 3, Yankees 1 • Matt Wieters followed a lengthy rain delay with a tiebreaking two-run, pinch single off Aroldis Chapman in the eighth to spark host Baltimore.

Chicago improved to 7-1 on its 10-game homestand and 38-15 overall, the best record in the majors. Cubs pitchers-particularly Arrieta and Jason Hammel-continue to perform relatively well at the plate. Adam Warren retired Nick Ahmed on a groundout to end the inning.

Duvall homered on a 1-1 pitch from Shawn Kelley moments after the game was resumed in the eighth to snap a 3-3 tie. The other came when the bullpen pitched seven flawless innings against Los Angeles after Jason Hammel exited with cramping in his right hamstring. His 0.64 ERA over that span was also the lowest ERA across a 10-start span in Wrigley Field history.

It took an odd series of events to replace the white flag with a blue “W” that had been a staple with the Cubs in town, including the rarest of losses by Jake Arrieta on a day manager Joe Maddon described his ace’s stuff as “electric”.

“They made me show I had the ability to get in the strike zone early with the intent to get in some hitter-friendly counts”, Arrieta said.

“He made a good pitch to Tomas, down and in”, Cubs catcher Miguel Montero said. I’m beginning to be a bit concerned about Montero, whose hitting hasn’t been good since his return from the DL, and whose defense hasn’t really been good all year.

Outfielder David Peralta (right wrist inflammation) remains on course to return from the 15-day disabled list on Monday.

Right-handed pitcher Shelby Miller (sprained right index finger) is scheduled to throw an extended spring game today.

Tomas was back in the lineup after missing Thursday’s game at Houston because of left knee soreness.

Cubs: It was Rondon’s first appearance since he was sidelined briefly with a sore back.

Joey Votto and Jay Bruce also homered for Cincinnati, which has won five of eight since ending an 11-game losing streak.
