“I’m not expecting a lot this week”, he said. “I just didn’t hole enough putts”.

“So, they’re just a bunch of great guys, and I love competing against them and the type of people you can have dinner with when you get done, no matter if you beat them or they beat you”.

Club pro John DalCorobbo is third at 11 under while Tom Lehman, Kirk Triplett and Brandt Jobe share fourth at 10 under.

Daly has won two major championships – the PGA Championship in 1991 and British Open in 1995 – but admits his lifestyle didn’t help his game much.

A solid two-putt finally saw Daly pick his ball up out of the cup, but meant he needed to pencil in a quintuple-bogey 9 on the par-4.

Montgomerie never won the PGA Championship, or any regular major, so the question was posed again.

Rocco Mediate won the Senior PGA Championship to deny Colin Montgomerie a third straight win in the event.

He had a nine on the par-4 16th. Daly has failed to seriously contend in his two PGA Tour Champions events since turning 50. The 58-year-old German won the Regions Tradition last week in Alabama for his sixth senior major title and 100th worldwide victory. So for the most part I think I did a good job.

Dal Corobbo is an assistant professional at Brickyard Crossing in Indianapolis, Ind. – you know, the golf course with four holes that are routed through the infield at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, home of the Indianapolis 500.

The highlight of Dalcorobbo’s round was when he chipped in from the fairway for eagle at the 18th. “Because going in there, it’s like I played some of the best golf I ever played in my life that day and lost. OK”.

The American made the first move with birdies at the third and fifth, and responded to a dropped shot at the seventh with back-to-back birdies into the turn while Montgomerie birdied five, six and nine.

RARELY does John Daly play a round of professional golf without something worth talking about occurring and his first round at the 2016 Senior PGA Championship on Thursday was no different.
