Cardinals demote Wong to make room for Peralta

Peralta has missed the entire 2016 regular season after suffering a left thumb injury in spring training.

The St. Louis Cardinals announced Monday that they have optioned second baseman Kolten Wong to the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds.

In parts of four major-league seasons, Wong owns a career.247/.303/.365 line with 24 home runs and 108 RBI. He is hitting. 250 with eight home runs and 26 RBIs in 48 games this season. Inking a five-year extension to remain with the Cardinals on March 2, the up-and-comer has now been demoted to the minor league ranks in order to find his stride while receiving a steady number of at bats. One of those answers looks like it will put Matt Carpenter back at second base, a position he played regularly in 2013, and Peralta will move to third. While Diaz has been a liability with the glove – 12 errors, -5.4 UZR – his bat was enough for the Cardinals to designate presumptive Peralta stopgap Ruben Tejada for assignment recently and will now keep him in the team’s everyday plans. Who will be sent down when Peralta returns remains to be seen, though a conclusion will be reached soon, what players play where is a question which many different possible answers.
