Clinton hits ‘magic number’ of delegates to clinch nomination

Hillary Clinton will become the first woman to ever be nominated for president by a major USA political party, the Associated Press reported Monday night, a historic and likely cathartic moment for the former secretary of state.

Campaign manager Robby Mook said Clinton was still looking ahead to six states voting on Tuesday, including New Jersey and California. Hillary leads right now by more than 3 million popular votes, she has a lead of nearly 300 pledged delegates, she’s won more states, and we want to continue to build on that lead going into these final contests.

In a last minute attempt to steal the California Democratic Presidential Primary and blunt outlier Bernie Sanders growing momentum, the Hillary Rodham Clinton Camp declared victory tonight.

According to the Associated Press, a tally of delegates pledged in primaries and caucuses as well as a survey of superdelegates shows Clinton has commitments from the 2,383 delegates needed to win the Democratic nomination.

However, she was defeated by then first-term Senator Barack Obama from IL in the nomination race, who later won the general election and became the first US African-American president. In recent days Clinton has turned her attention from Sanders to Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

The Democratic party has more than 700 superdelegates and at least 539 of them have already pledged support for Clinton. “I think it’s going to wake up the Democrat party”, San Francisco resident Roger Crawfod said.

“It’s fabulous that we would have a woman president, and I believe she will walk into that Oval Office one of the best prepared people to do so in our country’s history”, the California Democrat said. The first, pledged delegates, are apportioned based on the results of primaries and caucuses – Clinton now leads Bernie Sanders by a almost insurmountable number of pledged delegates (her 1,812 to his 1,512). “So if Hillary Clinton runs for president, it is sexist for any man to oppose her?”

“Our job from now until the convention is to convince those superdelegates that Bernie is by far the strongest candidate against Donald Trump”, Sanders spokesman Michael Briggs said.

Here’s a look at the count and how the AP determined Clinton has enough delegates to become the presumptive nominee, besting her primary rival, Vermont Sen.

Clinton has 1812 pledged delegates won in primaries and caucuses.

After spending the week stumping in the Golden State, Clinton is expected to hold a celebratory campaign event Tuesday near her campaign headquarters in Brooklyn.

Clinton has been eager to move past the protracted primary and fully turn her attention to her general election battle with Trump. She is on track to safely end the primary season with a majority of pledged delegates even if she loses all six states on Tuesday and in Washington, D.C., the following week.

Clinton’s campaign had anxious reaching the 2,383 delegate commitments could depress turnout in Tuesday’s elections and give Sanders an edge. “Let’s assess where we are after tomorrow”, he said.
