Governor Dayton Vetoes Tax Cut Bill

On Monday, Minnesota House Speaker Kurt Daudt was joined by farmers, business owners, and college graduates to urge Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton to sign a tax relief bill. The governor let a bill expire that would have provided about 260-million dollars worth of tax cuts to working families, farmers, veterans, and those with student loans. Besides tax breaks and local government aids, the bill also contains a one-word mistake that would cost the state more than $100 million.

Aitkin County Commissioner Donald Niemi tells reporters Monday, June 6, 2016, that a tax bill would help many Main Street businesses.

With coincidental timing, a judge in suburban Carver County scheduled a closed hearing to take place on Prince’s birthday to discuss his estate, which has temporarily been put under a professional administrator. A $1 billion-plus package of public works projects and a major transportation funding bill – a top priority for the last two years – both failed to pass this year. It’s called the “pocket veto”.

Norton said she’s still hopeful that the governor and legislative leaders can come together to agree on terms for a special session.

Governor Dayton actually supports the tax cut bill. The result would have been a big cut in taxes collected on charitable gambling, reducing money that should have gone to Vikings stadium construction.

It was not clear Friday whether Democrat Dayton’s lack of action could spur Republicans to begin negotiations on a special legislative session to fix the tax bill and consider funding construction projects that failed to receive lawmakers’ approval last month.

“Obviously the governor at that point is not acting in good faith”, he said.

“I do believe there will be a trust issue and I don’t think it will be quite as smooth sailing for a special session”, said House Taxes Chairman Greg Davids, R-Preston.

But the bigger the agenda gets, the harder it is to reach a compromise, Daudt said.
