Modi demonstrated Indian leadership on climate change: White House

Both leaders recognise that a strong relationship between the United States and India benefits the economy, the national security and the people of the U.S. and India, Earnest said, adding that he thinks this is what animates their relationship.

The news media in India have extensively chronicled comments by Trump that critics have said were racist, his “America First” views, and his unorthodox campaign.

Lauding India’s youth prowess, US President Barack Obama said that India is a young country and the US is aware of the talent Indian youth has.

“Our youth power can work with the United States to achieve new heights”, he said.

China is likely to use the Gadwar port of Pakistan once it becomes operational and the frequency of Chinese submarines will increase many a fold in the Indian Ocean in the coming days and pose a threat to the strategic assets of both India and the US.

The agreement’s language would make it hard for the U.S.to back out of the deal after it goes into effect, although Mr. Trump wants to roll back numerous administration’s environmental regulations that the White House says will enable the U.S.to meet the pollution reduction goals of the pact.

As The Christian Science Monitor’s Howard LaFranchi reports, for Obama, India plays a critical role in securing several legacy issues, including worldwide climate policy, the rebalancing of United States interests in a vaunted “Asia pivot”, confronting an expansionist China, and boosting global trade. The two sides are still discussing price, but more hard issues like liability have been resolved.

“It is my hope and the hope of the American people that this repatriation will serve as a sign of our great respect for India’s culture, our deep admiration for its people, and our honest appreciation for the ties between our nations”, said US Attorney General Loretta Lynch. Modi has made clear that he intends to set aside decades of standoffishness – rooted in India’s colonial experience – to cement closer ties with Washington, in part because the next American leader may not share President Obama’s enthusiasm for India.

Forging ahead with the Indo-US friendship, a number of issues from climate change, to defense cooperation, to a number of other things.

The warm relationship comes after a period of strain between Washington and Modi. When Obama visited India a year ago, Modi pulled the president into a bear hug as he stepped off Air Force One.
