The “freak” incident happened at Killowen Primary School in Lisburn, Northern Ireland.
UTV understands that a girl, believed to be the man’s daughter, was also seriously injured.
Children at the school, who had enjoyed their annual sports day earlier, were immediately evacuated from the auto park and taken to neighbouring Laurelhill Community College to keep them away from the traumatic scene.
Fiona Douglas, the school’s principal, said that the thoughts of the whole school were with the family.
The man and his son are described as being “critically ill”, while his daughter is said to be in a “serious” condition. The man was brought to Lagan Valley Hospital.
“My thoughts are with them”.
All three casualties were taken to hospital after ambulance crews attended the scene.
Northern Ireland has been basking in sunshine for the past week, but there were warnings of heavy rain and thunderstorms for parts of the region on Tuesday.
On Monday, thousands of homes were left without power following lightning strikes in the Republic.
Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness said: “Our hearts go out to the people involved and their family”.

SDLP Lisburn Councillor Pat Catney said that the local community is stunned following the incident.
