The superdelegates who were counted in Clinton’s total told the AP they were unequivocally supporting her.

“First time in our nation’s history that a woman will be a major party’s nominee”.

But Bernie Sanders’ campaign said it was a “rush to judgment” to declare Clinton the presumptive nominee given superdelegates can switch their support before the Democratic convention in late July.

The AP has also declared Clinton the victor in the South Dakota and New Mexico primaries and Sanders the victor in North Dakota’s caucus.

Clinton reached the 2,383 delegates needed to become the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee on the eve of Tuesday’s voting, according to an Associated Press tally.

After her win in New Jersey, Clinton had 2,441 delegates to Sanders’ 1,616. If Clinton extends a willingness to work with Sanders, and many of his policies are adopted, I’m willing to vote for her. Early polls in California showed Clinton leading Sanders.

The White House statement appeared to ratify Hillary Clinton’s claim to the nomination: “The President congratulated Secretary Clinton for securing the delegates necessary to clinch the Democratic Nomination for President”, the statement, issued by the White House press secretary, read.

Mr Sanders will visit Mr Obama at the White House on Thursday, per Mr Sanders’ request, according to the White House memo. As she began, standing under enormous American flags, she paid tribute to the early suffragettes.

Donald Trump won Republican primaries in New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota, capping an otherwise hard day for the presumptive GOP nominee.

Ryan said he has also talked with Trump about the “tone” the candidate uses on the campaign trail. She made reference to the metaphorical glass ceiling that she has now shattered.

At a victory party steeped in history of the women’s rights movement, Clinton, the first woman to top the ticket of a major USA party, urged Democrats to look beyond the primary to the general election “battle that awaits”.

“He has spent his long career in public service fighting for progressive causes and principles and has excited millions of voters, especially young people”, she said. House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi didn’t wait for the votes Tuesday to announce her support. However, the California results might not be known Tuesday night; more than half of Californians vote by mail, and the deadline for returned ballots isn’t until Friday, as long as they are postmarked by Election Day.

Earlier in the evening, Mr Trump, speaking from a Teleprompter, focused nearly exclusively on economic issues. At the rally, Trump defiantly led chants of “build that wall”, a reference to his immigration plans.

Sanders’ achievements have been remarkable for a candidate who was unknown to most Americans before the campaign. The rest of the party faithful will likely be more inclined to wait and see. “I will make you proud of our party and our movement”. “The night before the largest primary, biggest primary in the whole process, they make this announcement”, he said.

New Jersey and California are the biggest prizes up for grabs Tuesday, with Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota and South Dakota also holding contests.

The billionaire turned his attention to the election in November in his remarks at Trump National Golf Club in Briarcliff Manor, New York.

“When Donald Trump says a distinguished judge born in IN can’t do his job because of his Mexican heritage, or he mocks a reporter with disabilities, or calls women pigs, it goes against everything we stand for”.
